Katherine 4 teamIRIS recently completed a further week-long outpatient and surgical visit to Katherine Hospital in the Northern Territory.

Lead by Senior Opthalmologist Dr Bill Glasson, the smallest IRIS team to visit the Hospital still delivered substantial results with 39 procedures  over 3.5 days of operating and 250 outpatient consultations held.

This is the 6th visit from an IRIS team to the Katherine Region in the last 2 years. The visits delivered by IRIS are a unique partnership between IRIS and the many key stakeholders involved in eye care delivery in the region. Katherine Hospital, Royal Darwin Hospital, the Fred Hollows Foundation’s Indigenous Australia Program, and three local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (Wurli Wurlinjang Health Service, Sunrise Health Service and Katherine West Health Board) have worked tirelessly with IRIS during the past two years to dramatically improve access to eye health services for patients living in the various communities of the remote Katherine region.

IRIS Taskforce Chair Dr Mark Loane says theirs is a success story that deserves celebrating.“Through the support of these key organisations IRIS has visited Katherine six times to conduct intensive outreach clinics offering both surgical and outpatient services,” Dr Loane explained. Dr Loane said the co-ordination
and genuine partnership between local health providers and IRIS was one of the chief reasons the venture has been such a success.

The IRIS team is multi-disciplinary. Its make-up, which changes from clinic to clinic, includes: a co-ordinator, ophthalmologists, registrars, anaesthetists, nurses, optometrists, and medical students.

To date more than 150 eye procedures have been performed on patients and 1,135 outpatient consultations have been undertaken. These services have significantly reduced the length of time patients in the region are waiting to receive treatment for various eye conditions.
